Return to HELP
There are 2 known causes of our manuals failing to display after unlocking. Fortunately this is fairly rare.
1) Browser Hijackers or various kinds interfere with the proper operation of our manuals.
2) Symatec - Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall. This program has documented problems distinguishing good guys from bad guys in many consumer reports and in our testing. Norton problems with false positives (mistaking a program for a virus) are well documented. Unfortunately, how to cure this problem is not well documented.
Our manuals have been in use since early 2000, fully compatible with all Windows versions 95 & up.
We've never had a reported problem with any other virus protection software preventing anyone from running our electronic manuals.
Norton - Symatec Users:
When adding an EZdesk eManual or upgrading to a new
release, it is necessary to configure your firewall to allow the new release
access to the internet - in the case of many firewalls
it will be seen as a new program. A number of people have apparently had
difficulty configuring their Norton Internet Secuirty
NIS, so here are some step by step guidelines.
Step One: Open NIS Firewall by right
clicking on the NIS taskbar icon. Choose NIS
and left click. You will then see the following
Status and Settings panel (click here to see it). Select
Personal Firewall.
Step Two: When you click on Personal
Firewall,
some new buttons (click here to see them) will appear. Click the
Configure button
Step Three: The screen will change to the
Personal Firewall section (click here to see it) with tabs along the
top. Select the Programs tab.
Step Four:
Clicking on the
Programs tab will bring up the
Program Control screen. In the Manual
Program Control section, scroll down until you can see the entry for
your eManaul.
Step Five: Left
click under Internet Access and change to
permit all, and left click under category
and change to general
Step Six: Click the
OK button. Exit out of NIS.
Reboot your machine and our Manual should
work and connect without further problems.
These instructions are for NIS 2005 but earlier versions of Norton Personal
Firewall use similar screens.
Alternatives we think are better than Norton Symatec
Here are quality anti-virus programs which have had higher effectiveness ratings by many consumer reporting companies an comparisons. They do not "take control" of your machine or hog so much memory. You'll enjoy the speed of your system after you replace the Norton -Symatec program. WE DID!
Be SURE to follow their instructions EXACTLY when removing. It is a very difficult program to remove completely as it is very invasive in our opinion.
TO prevent AND remove hijackers, try Spybot Search & Destroy.
